On Friday 7th June the St Bede Swimming team attended the Primary Schools Swimming Gala at River Park Leisure Centre. There were 27 schools in total competing at the event, which meant that the competition was strong. All the children were very excited to get started and enjoyed putting on their Penguins Gala T-shirts and preparing to do some fast swimming!
After a land warm up and having squeezed into the changing rooms to get ready, the first event was the boys’ mixed stroke relay. The St Bede team consisting of Jack, Alex, Oliver and Finley had a fantastic race, coming in 2nd in their heat.
The Girls’ mixed stroke relay was next, with the team of Lilla, Isabella, Camilla and Sophie. The girls swam another great race, coming 3rd in their heat.
After the mixed stroke relays, it was the turn of our year 4 children in their individual events. Alfie was up first in the 25m freestyle race. He showed great courage and commitment to the race and manage to secure 3rd place in his heat. Orla and Isabella were up next, showing fantastic effort and coming in 1st and 3rd respectively.
Following the individual races, it was time for the freestyle relays. Again, the boys and the girls raced their socks off and the boys came an impressive 1st in their heat, shooting through to the final. The girls managed to secure 2nd spot in their heat and also secured a place in the final. In the finals, the boys came 3rd in both the mixed stroke and the freestyle relay and the girls placed 6th in the freestyle relay.
Orla swam her socks off in her individual event which meant she had the opportunity to swim again in the 25m final. With courage, determination and focus, she stepped up to swim even faster and win a third place rosette.
The whole team were incredibly supportive of one another throughout the gala. Thank you to Miss Barwick for her help and support during the trials and the gala.
