St Bede Sporting success

2023-2024 continues to be a successful year for our sports teams.  Six of our best badminton players attended the Winchester and Eastleigh Schools Tournament. Nine schools battled it out to qualify for the County Championships that take place in February.

We have a very strong talent pool to choose from, with Tim Cook’s Badminton sessions producing very able players, year after year. Our mixed team of were outstanding throughout, showing great skill, teamwork and concentration. They were able to adapt and overcome some very challenging opponents. St Bede had two other schools, Cherbourg and Merdon, in their pool and needed good results in all of their games to progress to the finals. In the eight matches that the team played, they scored a total of 171 points and conceded only 108. They won all eight matches and played their way to the top of their group, earning a spot in next month’s County Championships.

On Wednesday 24th January , our girls’ football team were in action. Nineteen teams entered the Winchester and Eastleigh Schools Tournament, a fantastic achievement from the organisers and all the schools involved. The mighty Lionesses would have been proud with the level of skill and tenacity shown by our St Bede team. We were the only team in the competition to bring Year 4s along with our Year 5s and 6s. Every player was there on merit and they gave their all, showing superb team spirit and commitment throughout. After winning their first game 1-0 against a strong St Francis side, they then drew 1-1 in a friendly. Their other pool game against St Faiths ended in a 0-0 draw, which saw St Bede top the group and make it through to the semi-finals. In a tight game, St Bede won 3-1 on penalties, reaching the final and qualifying for the Hampshire County Finals in February.

In the final, they came up against a quality Western team, packed with experienced year 6s. The result did not go our way but it was a fantastic experience, with everyone in the squad involved in the game. The girls should be very proud of their efforts and can now look forward to the County Finals in February!
