  • Chalking the Door at St. Bede

    Mon 29 Jan 2024

At the beginning of the term, in our worship time we were remembering that the Christian Christmas story moved beyond the birth of Jesus to the arrival of the Three Wise Men.

To support Church schools and to mark Epiphany, Winchester Diocese sent out resources linked to the custom of Chalking the Door. At St Bede, each class made their own sign for their classroom door, detailing the year we are now in and the letters C, M, and B which stand for the Magi; Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, or alternatively for the Latin blessing Christus mansionem benedicat (‘May Christ bless this house’).

Canon Roly Riem, from Winchester Cathedral, joined us for our whole school worship session and then visited each class to talk with them about their learning, about the door sign they had made and to share a blessing for the year ahead.

  • Internet/Online Safety Meeting

    Mon 29 Jan 2024

Thank you to Mr Howes who led our Internet safety meeting earlier this term.  We hope that the guidance and strategies shared at the meetings were useful to help support the safe use of technology outside of school.

If you have any questions or queries please email them to the school office and Mr Howes has kindly agreed for us to forward them to him for further advice and support.

  • Welcoming the new Bishop of Winchester

    Mon 29 Jan 2024

Well done to our pupils who represented the school and welcomed the new Bishop of Winchester, the Right Reverend Philip Mountstephen at Winchester Cathedral on Saturday 13th January.   He is the 98th person in this position and a number of our classes are named after previous Bishops of Winchester, so holds an important post.

We were fortunate to receive an invitation and experience this special occasion. The pupils who attended the service were excellent ambassadors for the school and we all felt that we had experienced something very memorable and a significant moment in the ongoing history of our city.

  • St Bede School Choir take part in Young Voices at the O2

    Mon 29 Jan 2024

On Wednesday 17th January, 26 pupils from our school choir went to the O2 in London for the ‘Young Voices’ concert. Our children became part of a massed choir of over 8700 children. We were so proud of the beautiful singing from our own choir and of their behaviour in a demanding day. There was such a sense of joy and celebration that evening.

Kiera, our Head of Music, reflected on the event.   ‘We had a rehearsal and went through all the songs. There were some special guests; MC Grammar, an amazing 13 year old drummer and a jazz singer.  We had an amazing concert.’

A huge thank you to Miss Scotland for leading the trip and for leading our school choir at their rehearsals each week and to Mrs Cornter and Mrs Lockyer who accompanied the trip and joined in with such enthusiasm and style. Congratulations to all the children involved who can now say that they performed at the O2 and thank you to the parents who managed to come and see their children perform and to those who came out in the cold late at night to get their weary singers home.

  • HSA News - New Project!

    Mon 29 Jan 2024

Following discussion at a committee meeting with the HSA, we will be launching a new project in the coming weeks. We are aware of the challenges of having enough space at school to meet the individual needs of all our children, and are exploring building a teaching and meeting room in the quad area.

Our hope is that this would enable children to access a quieter space as needed, which could also provide a meeting space for parents/our community, and possibly a space for extra club and/or music provision. We are planning some focus fundraising projects to begin in the summer term and hope that you will want to get involved and support us. Please keep an eye out for more information over the coming weeks and months.

  • Congratulations from Damian Hinds MP

    Mon 29 Jan 2024

We were delighted to receive a letter from Damian Hinds MP congratulating us on the achievements of our Year 4 pupils last year when they undertook the multiplication tables check. The letter stated ‘Your average pupil score of 24.6 out of 25 makes St Bede Church of England Primary School one of the top 200 performing schools in England for the multiplication tables check.  The excellent achievement of your pupils is something the Government hopes to see replicated in schools across the country.’

This was a lovely acknowledgement of the hard work of pupils, staff and parents in preparing for this screening check, which took place in the summer. Congratulations to all involved!

  • St Bede Sporting success

    Mon 29 Jan 2024

2023-2024 continues to be a successful year for our sports teams.  Six of our best badminton players attended the Winchester and Eastleigh Schools Tournament. Nine schools battled it out to qualify for the County Championships that take place in February.

We have a very strong talent pool to choose from, with Tim Cook’s Badminton sessions producing very able players, year after year. Our mixed team of were outstanding throughout, showing great skill, teamwork and concentration. They were able to adapt and overcome some very challenging opponents. St Bede had two other schools, Cherbourg and Merdon, in their pool and needed good results in all of their games to progress to the finals. In the eight matches that the team played, they scored a total of 171 points and conceded only 108. They won all eight matches and played their way to the top of their group, earning a spot in next month’s County Championships.

On Wednesday 24th January , our girls’ football team were in action. Nineteen teams entered the Winchester and Eastleigh Schools Tournament, a fantastic achievement from the organisers and all the schools involved. The mighty Lionesses would have been proud with the level of skill and tenacity shown by our St Bede team. We were the only team in the competition to bring Year 4s along with our Year 5s and 6s. Every player was there on merit and they gave their all, showing superb team spirit and commitment throughout. After winning their first game 1-0 against a strong St Francis side, they then drew 1-1 in a friendly. Their other pool game against St Faiths ended in a 0-0 draw, which saw St Bede top the group and make it through to the semi-finals. In a tight game, St Bede won 3-1 on penalties, reaching the final and qualifying for the Hampshire County Finals in February.

In the final, they came up against a quality Western team, packed with experienced year 6s. The result did not go our way but it was a fantastic experience, with everyone in the squad involved in the game. The girls should be very proud of their efforts and can now look forward to the County Finals in February!

  • HSA Disco

    Mon 29 Jan 2024

There was much excitement last night when the school hall was transformed into a disco wonderland for our older children in Key Stage 2. Dressed in their finery and with some impressive moves, the children who attended had a wonderful time while also raising funds to support projects at school.

A huge thank you to the wonderful HSA team of volunteers who organised and supervised the event- an incredible £950 was made!
