On Friday 22nd November, we promoted the importance of staying safe when out and about in the darker winter months and the importance of road safety. Well done to our wonderful Junior Road Safety Officers who have helped lead a worship sharing important messages linked to their area of responsibility.
The month of November is always very busy as we have our usual teaching and learning, but we also address wider focus days and initiatives. We have thought about the importance of kindness and how to show kindness to each other, but also how to respond when people are repeatedly unkind and how to respond if we see or are aware of bullying.
Alongside this we have also had lots of fun to raise awareness of the work of the Charity Children in Need and were amazed at the generosity of our community, raising approximately £500 through donations, thank you! A special thank you to our Year 6 Heads of Sport who led each class in a dance challenge and this was repeated as part of a lovely outdoor assembly, congratulations to everyone involved.
At the start of November, Year 3 have been making seasonal crumbles! They have learnt about different fruits and vegetables that are in season, and tasted a variety, which informed their choice of crumble filling. The children then practised the skills of chopping and peeling fruit and learnt about food hygiene. After this, the children made their crumbles to take home and enjoy! Well done everyone! Thank you to Tesco for their donation of some apples to support our project!
On Friday 25th October, Year 4 headed off to Salisbury City Museum. Excited by the double-decker coach that awaited them, the intrepid historians were armed with skills to finalise their understanding of the impact of the Romans on Britain. Despite the rain falling down on them as they walked past the magnificent cathedral to enter the museum, their spirits where not dampened, and they quickly went to work.
There were two different parts to the day, one of them was exploring the Wessex Gallery, which houses artefacts that archaeologists have discovered dating back to the Bronze Age – the children were amazed to find bones as old as 5000 years ago. Using their understanding, they explored the Roman section, finding a central heating system, bracelets, a tomb and even a mosaic floor. The second exploration was handling artefacts as if they were archaeologists, to try and work out what these finds might tell them about the Romans. After this, they got to make their own pottery shard in a Roman style which they have brought back to school to display. Here are some quotes from children who attended the trip.
"It was really exciting to look at some historic items which were older than I can imagine!" William (Alswitha).
"I liked hearing the amazing stories of historic people that we saw the skeletons of!" Eloisa (Alswitha)
