On Monday 22nd September, our Year 6 pupils enjoyed a fantastic team-building day at Fairthorne Manor. Throughout the day, they took part in a variety of outdoor and adventurous activities — including paddleboarding for the very first time! It was wonderful to see the children embracing the challenges with enthusiasm, demonstrating our school values, and working collaboratively to overcome each challenge and having fun together.
The day concluded with a lively campfire filled with singing, dancing, and some truly impressive performances from the pupils. Judging by their talent and energy, this year’s Christmas talent show promises to be something very special! (This may be an early reminder to start thinking about what talents your children have that can be shared- and even start practising.)
To finish the first half of the summer term, Year 6 had a choc-tastic adventure to Cadbury World! They had a wonderful time sampling melted chocolate in pots, riding the 4d Cadbury adventure ride and learning all about the rich history of chocolate. They also enjoyed a talk about the ancient Maya and discovering how they used chocolate as part of their daily lives.
A wonderful day out and plenty of sweet treats to take home! The trip, generously subsidised by the HSA, was a really engaging hook into our history topic which created many happy memories along the way.
On Thursday 22nd May, Year 3 celebrated Roman Day! We were visited by a gladiator who taught the children about the Roman army and what the day in the life of a person in the Roman Period looks like. The children also really enjoyed a range of exciting, out of the ordinary activities such as mosaic making and clay pot sculpting! Thank you to the HSA whose generous donation has subsidised the cost of this experience.
We have been so incredibly proud of our Year 6 pupils as they have completed their National Curriculum Tests. Throughout the test week, they have shown such focus and positivity in their work and have supported each other throughout.
The end of the week included a visit from the ice cream van and each child was given an ice cream- generously funded by the HSA. We are so grateful for their support in enabling this lovely tradition to take place- it was enjoyed on a beautiful sunny day and was a really happy end to a busy week.
On Tuesday 13th May, the Year R Classes were visited by the Creature Teacher Company. Lisa and Jade brought all sorts of creatures with them and told us facts about each one and how to stroke or hold them. The children met Nanouk the ferret, Steve the blue-tongued lizard, Nanonzo Al Fonzo the snake, 3 millipedes and then watched Thistle the owl, take flight across the classroom and land on a child’s arm!
Everyone was thrilled by the visit – eyes were wide with so many smiles and enthusiasm. No one wanted the session to end! This visit was generously funded by the HSA which we are very grateful for. The children will have such wonderful memories of such a fun and interesting enrichment opportunity.
Year 2 and in Butterfly Class took part in Samba workshops, kindly funded by the HSA, following on from those in Year 1 and Ladybird Class.
Butterfly class were visited by Rachel from the Hampshire Music Service. We had lots of fun singing and playing games that focussed on listening skills. We were each given a scarf and we matched our actions with the words in the songs. The children loved moving in time with the music.
Year 2 were lucky to have the exciting opportunity to take part in a music workshop run by the Hampshire Music Service. Millais and Nightingale got their hands on some bamboo tamboos and found out that these are traditional instruments from the Caribbean. We were taught that they can be played by tapping on the floor or hitting them on the side with a beater, the children loved the different sounds that these techniques made! We were taught some different Caribbean beats and a couple of songs to play along with too!
A massive thank you to the HSA for organising and funding such a wonderful enrichment opportunity for the children, this would not have been possible without their support! The children had a wonderful time taking part!
We have been contacted by the Road Safety Team in Hampshire who report that they are always shocked to hear how many children don’t always wear their seatbelt, even as young as Year 5 pupils, so we are aware that this is such an important message and could save the children’s and their families lives.

Year 1 and Ladybird Class took part in Samba workshops, kindly funded by the HSA.
Ladybird Class enjoyed singing with scarves. Everyone was given a scarf to sing and move with. The session was very colourful, lots of fun and full of happy faces with everyone joining in and enjoying themselves while learning to start and stop in time to the songs Rachel sang with us.
Year 1 had a fantastic opportunity to take part in a music workshop, learning and exploring how to use bamboo tamboo’s. Walker and Wykeham found out that the instruments came from the Caribbean and learnt how to use them by hitting the floor with the bottom or by tapping the side. We took part in chants and sang songs, making sure we were hitting our bamboo tamboo in time with the music. We then challenged ourselves by creating a pattern!
We were joined on Monday 28th April in our worship time to announce the total of monies raised by the Jumping for Joy Initiative. On Monday, the jumps made by children at St Bede had already exceeded 166,000! Over £4,000 has already been raised which is an incredible total and will benefit all children at St Bede over the coming year. The HSA provide much needed financial support to fund and off set the cost of purchases and initiatives that school budgets alone are no longer able to cover in addition to staff costs.
Examples of where money raised by the HSA has gone this year include Creature Teachers visiting Year R, Chinese Dragon Workshops for children in Year 2, subsidising trips to Sea City, Butser Farm, Salisbury Museum, The Science Centre and Fairthorne Manor for Years 2,3,4, 5 and 6 and will be supporting the cost of the upcoming Year 1 trip to Hillers Arboretum this summer. The HSA also funded the entire cost of the visit from the BBC rhyme rocket team earlier in the year and provide lovely treats such as ice lollies at sports day each summer and keep our ICT resources up to date and way beyond the provision some other state schools locally are able to provide.
We are so grateful to be so well supported in this way and are able to enrich children’s experience at school, creating wonderful memories of their time at St Bede because of the financial help provided. Thank you to everyone for your engagement in initiatives, events and especially to those who volunteer time to plan and run school events.
St Bede were represented by Margot and Eloisa Street-Moore at the Bike Bus World Summit this month. We learned a lot, including what true pioneers St Bede are, having run a “bus” since early 2022 - one of the world’s first in what is now a rapidly growing global network!
Eloisa and Margot created a poem with other bike bus kids from around the world about what biking means to them based on the ideas you shared (and our Eco Reps expertly curated) - thank you!
